Mercian U14 Development League

MKHC under 14 completed a double header at the weekend, finishing with a win and a loss.

MKHC 5 - Aylesbury 1

MKs first game was against a young Aylesbury side, which gave the home team the chance to give first caps to several younger players. Ben Bambrough-Stimpson and Jeremy Caglayan both playing well, but newcomer Jack Gardner in particular looked very comfortable in the side and is a great prospect for coming seasons. MK opened well, and after a period of even pressure from both teams, managed to break the deadlock, with Tom Maddox netting for the hosts. Aylesbury managed to reply almost immediately to square the score though, and the game remained closely balanced. Ben Spencer restored the MK advantage, dribbling into the D and finishing well. Man of the Match Gareth Watkins controlled the midfield, picking off nearly all the opposition posession in the middle of the pitch, with defenders Josh Lauder, Adam Morgan, Jack Thorpe and Dwight Eaton clearing up behind. Watkins was rewarded with a trade mark drive and score goal midway through the second half. Ben Spencer then added to his tally with a short corner strike, and Ben Jones rounded off the win with an excellent sweep into goal following a flowing passing move.

MKHC 1 - Gerrards Cross 4

MKs second game was a tougher experience. MK had already reverted to it's regular squad - knowing that GX were playing a regular side, however with MK playing this year to EHA calendar year age-groups and GX still playing to school year MK found themselves facing a much older and stronger squad. Despite this MK played and challenged right through to the end of the game and had they taken more of the shooting chances created woud have been closer in score line. Indeed thanks to the efforts of the defensive line, and Man of the Match goalkeeper Sam Spencer, MK had finished the first half at 1-1. Despite spending 90% of the half in their own 25 the MK defence and netminder kept the ball out of the goal time and again. By contrast MK had one attack, with Gareth Watkins driving the length of the pitch into the D and slotting the ball through the GX keeper. Unfortunatley given the pressure from GX, the MK side couldn't manage the constant pressure and conceeded 3 in the second half, and sadly didn't manage another shot on target to test the GX defence.

National Vets Cup - MK Vets 2 - 3 Gloucester City

MK Vets crashed out of the EH Masters Cup on Sunday, narrowly loosing out to determined and capable opponents Gloucester. The match opened with both teams fighting for midfield control and it was Gloucester who opened the scoring capitalising on a defensive clearance error which left goalkeeper Taff stranded. But MK reorganised, the scratch team was reshuffled to bolster the defences and on came Alec Hornshaw to test his fitness. Now MK pressure created short corner opportunities and we converted first through Stuart Riches deflecting on the post and soon after a straight strike from Mark Ling. MK leading at the interval 2-1.

Gloucester though perhaps inspired by team talk came back in the second half with something of a surge. Strong overlapping play and determined runs by the youthful Gloucester attack made constant attritional inroads towards the Maginot line of Snelling, Knox and Bastow, and like the Germans they eventually got around the back and leveling the score with 15 minutes to go. The MK goal came under constant pressure, with Taff making it exceptionally difficult for the visitors and twice when he was beaten a defender was there to clear off the line. MK countered on the break, winning a sequence of shorts which in turn put Gloucester under severe pressure. Amidst the frenetic chaos it was MK who lacked the stamina and Gloucester finally broke the deadlock with an excellently composed and executed broadside of a short corner.

Lets not forget Ryan, who despite finding out he was too young to take the field 30 minutes before the start provided endless encouragement and support from the side. We will try again next year, a valiant effort from all concerned, and congratulations to our worthy and piratical opponents in the next round.

Passion, Speed, Respect - England Hockey

This week, England Hockey unveils its new Three Lions logo and announces a five year kit partnership with Adidas ahead of the men’s squad’s departure to Australia for the ABN AMRO Champions Trophy.

The announcement continues the journey for hockey as a national sport on its way once more to a greater world ranking and Olympic success. Core values of ‘Passion’, ‘Speed’ and ‘Respect’ underpin the evolution of the new identity while the Three Lions logo gives England a national emblem of pride – bringing hockey into line with football and cricket and other top tier national sports.

As the sport rides high on recent European success, this new identity aims to bring with it a greater awareness for hockey nationwide. The strong branding and Three Lions logo provides an opportunity to celebrate and showcase the sport to engage once more with hockey players and fans, increasing participation and spectator numbers.

View From The Chair - July 2009

Guys as we prepare for the new season ahead I wanted to give you a round up of last season. It is difficult to know how I will report back everything succinctly such has been the success for the club both on and off the pitch. I will however do my best!!

Without doubt last season was the most successful season for the club, the pinnacle being the promotion of the 1st X1 as champions to the South League.

I thanked many people at the outstanding end of season dinner, this continues to grow and become more successful, and rightly become the focus for both the men’s and ladies club to celebrate the season’s achievement in style. I reiterated those thanks in my report for the AGM but suffice to say there are many to applaud for the success and development the club achieved last season.....
